Energy transition: challenges and opportunities for industry
Bilbao, 2-4 June 2025
The Spanish Association for Energy Economics (AEEE) is pleased to announce the celebration of the 20th Annual Congress on June 2, 3, and 4, 2025, in Bilbao. The University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), in collaboration with BC3-Basque Centre for Climate Change, will host the most important academic and business congress on Energy Economics in Spain.
Cristina Rivero, Director of Industry, Energy, Environment, and Climate at CEOE, and Prof. Dr. Stefan Lechtenböhmer, Co-Director of the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, and Energy, will participate as speakers in the plenary sessions.
There are two ways of participation in the congress: Presentations and Exhibition of research projects.
All submissions will be made through the platform of the web page of the congress. The submission period will be open from January 16, 2025, to March 18, 2025.
All information available at: https://aeee.es/xx_congreso_aeee/
a) Communications:
The Scientific Committee and the Organising Committee invite researchers in the field of Energy Economics to submit their original papers (theoretical and/or empirical) to the 20th AEEE Congress.
The full paper or a short version of it (with the same structure and a length of no less than 700 words) must be submitted. Subsequently, and after evaluation, those papers selected for presentation in the parallel sessions of the congress will be communicated. At the time of registration for the congress, you will be registered in the Association, as it is a requirement for the presentation of papers to be a member of the Association.
Each accepted paper must be defended by one of the authors. The submission will be made through the communications platform.
Papers submitted must follow a standard format including an introduction, methodology, results and conclusions. The first page must contain the following information: name, affiliation and e-mail address of the author and co-authors, title of the paper, abstract of no more than 100 words, 3 JEL codes, and a maximum of 5 keywords. It will consist of a single file in PDF format, with a maximum size of 2MB.
Papers will be subject to an evaluation process by the Scientific Committee. The decision will be communicated to the contact author.
Selection of papers for “Papeles de Energía”
The journal “Papeles de Energía”, published by FUNCAS, aims to contribute to the dissemination among non-academic sectors of society of the main challenges and solutions for the energy transition, both in Spain and globally. On the occasion of the celebration of the annual congress of the AEEE, “Papeles de Energía” calls for a special issue that will be composed of three papers selected by the editor of the journal. These will analyse, in an informative yet rigorous way, aspects related to the energy transition. Each of these papers will receive 300 euros gross for their contribution to the journal. In addition, the authors must be open to making any editorial modifications (always minor) that the journal editor may indicate to them.
In order to participate in the selection of papers, this intention must be stated when registering for the conference.
b) Research Projects Presentations:
If you are participating in a Research Project related to the theme of the congress and you want to present your results or simply explain what your group is researching and how you are doing it, or look for possible collaborations, you can apply to present this project in the Research Project Session.
To do so, you have to send a page with the following data: name of the project, funding entity, coordinator/principal investigator, affiliation, e-mail address of the sender, and a summary -no more than 500 words- describing the project as well as the possibility of possible collaborations with other researchers. The submission must consist of a single file in PDF format.
Proposals will be subject to the evaluation process by the Scientific Committee. To present in this session, it is necessary to register as a participant in the Congress.
Participants are encouraged to present the project, highlighting its main objectives and development phases.
Red Eléctrica Awards for young researchers:
In order to encourage the participation of young researchers, authors aged 35 years or under on 31 December 2025 (co-authors are not subject to the age requirements) are eligible for these Awards. Winners of the Red Eléctrica Special Award in previous editions are not eligible to compete.
Participants must present an original paper at the Congress and must be members of the AEEE. It will be positively valued if the paper is presented as a single author. The Scientific Committee will be responsible for the decision, and will evaluate the papers according to criteria of quality and relevance within the field of Energy Economics. To participate in the Awards, it will be necessary to state this intention when registering for the conference.
The Awards consist of a ‘Red Eléctrica Special Award’ (€1,000 gross), two runners-up prizes (€500 gross each) and three travel bags to attend the Congress (€300 gross each) to different individuals. These gross amounts will be reduced by 19% for personal income tax withholding. If none of the proposals reach the quality required by the Committee, then the Awards may be declared void.
